Dentures
Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth. A removable partial denture (RPD) fills gaps when some natural teeth remain; a complete denture replaces all the teeth in an upper or lower jaw.
Dentures may suit you if
- You have lost several teeth and want to chew and smile comfortably again
- You have no teeth left in one or both jaws
- You need a replacement that is less invasive than implants
- Your current denture is loose, cracked or uncomfortable
What happens, step by step
- Assessment
We check the gums and any remaining teeth, and treat problems first.
- Impressions
Accurate impressions of your mouth are taken.
- Bite and try-in
We record how your jaws meet and let you try a wax version so you can see the shape and colour before it is finished.
- Fitting
The finished denture is fitted and we check the bite and comfort.
- Adjustments
A few short follow-ups to ease any sore spots are normal.
How many visits? Several visits over a few weeks.
Afterwards
- Speaking and eating take practice. Start with soft food cut into small pieces.
- Sore spots are common at first. Come back so we can adjust the denture; do not put up with them.
- Take the denture out and clean it every day, and rinse it after meals.
- Clean it over a basin of water or a folded towel so it does not break if dropped.
- Never use hot water, which can warp it.

Questions about dentures
How long does it take to get used to dentures?
It varies, but most people adapt to speaking and eating over a few weeks.
Should I sleep with my dentures in?
Generally it is advised to take them out at night to rest the gums. We will tell you what is right in your case.
Why does my old denture feel loose?
The gums and bone change shape over time, so a denture that once fitted can become loose. It may need relining or replacing.
Can a loose denture be made more stable?
Yes, dental implants can be used to anchor a denture. Ask about it at your visit.
