Crowns & bridges
A crown is a cap that covers the whole visible part of a tooth to protect and restore it. A bridge, also called a fixed partial denture, replaces a missing tooth by anchoring a false tooth to crowns on the teeth either side.
A crown or bridge may help when
- A back tooth has had root canal treatment
- A tooth is cracked, heavily filled or badly worn
- A large filling keeps breaking
- A tooth is discoloured or misshapen and a filling will not do
- You have a gap from a missing tooth with healthy teeth on either side
Zirconia or metal-ceramic?
Porcelain fused over a metal base. Strong and long-established. Over time a thin dark line can sometimes show at the gum.
Metal-free and tooth-coloured all the way through, and very strong. A popular choice where appearance matters.

What happens, step by step
- Preparing the tooth
Under local anaesthetic the tooth is shaped so the crown can fit over it.
- Impression and shade
We take an impression and match the shade to your other teeth.
- Temporary crown
A temporary crown protects the tooth while the permanent one is made.
- Fitting
At the next visit the permanent crown or bridge is checked for fit and bite, then cemented in place.
How many visits? Usually two visits.
Afterwards
- Your bite may feel different for a day or two. If it still feels high, come back for a quick adjustment.
- Brush and floss as normal. Under a bridge, use a floss threader or interdental brush to clean the gap.
- Avoid using your teeth to open packets or bite very hard objects.

Does preparing a tooth for a crown hurt?
It is done under local anaesthetic. The tooth can be a little sensitive for a few days afterwards.
How do I clean under a bridge?
Food collects under the false tooth, so thread floss or a small interdental brush under it every day. We will show you how.
Can a crown be whitened later?
No. Whitening does not change the colour of crowns, so if you want whiter teeth, whiten first and match the crown afterwards.
